Best Selling Cars

A four-door saloon is topping this year's sales chart, as usual, but it's not the Toyota Corolla Altis…

Four-door saloons have topped the sales charts in Singapore for as long as I can remember, so it's no surprise to find that a saloon tops this year's list.
But the perennial favourite, the Toyota Corolla Altis, has been ousted from the top spot by a new entrant. Let's count down the top ten best-selling cars here in Singapore so far this year…
10) Lancer GLX (from $52,988)
The GLX is basically a cut-price version of the previous generation Lancer. Despite its age, it's still a popular choice thanks to it's 'Made in Japan' appeal and attractive price tag. The engine is a little noisy though, and the CVT gearbox not the most efficient.
9) Honda Jazz (from $69,100) (HONDA FIT)
The Jazz is the island's most popular compact hatchback model, and it's not hard to see why. The little Honda is possibly the smartest packaged small car out there, offering acres of space on the inside. Another strong point of the Jazz is its fuel efficiency - the engines are absolute misers when drinking unleaded.
8) Nissan Latio (from $71,000)
The Latio's stable mate, the Sunny, used to be the biggest-selling car. Although popular, the Latio isn't as popular, perhaps due to the many cheaper models available these days. The compact Nissan comes in either a five-door hatch or four-door saloon to widen its appeal.
7) Honda Civic (from $83,300)
One of the hot favourites in recent years, Civic sales have fallen recently due to its premium pricing and age. There are a wide variety of variants available to suit almost every need, including a hybrid version and a hot Type R performance model.
6) Toyota Camry (from $96,988)
One of many Toyota models in the top ten - it seems that local car buyers can't seem to stay away from the Japanese brand. The Camry dominates the large saloon class even though there are plenty of talented competition in the form of the Nissan Teana, Mazda 6 and Honda Accord, among others.

5) Toyota Wish (from $72,000)

The Wish is Singapore's most popular MPV, by far. Just like the Toyota saloon models in the top ten, it's a logical choice for car buyers here. Despite its relatively compact exterior dimensions, the interior offers reasonable space for seven occupants. Fuel economy is another strong point thanks to the efficient 1.8-litre VVTi motor. A new generation model is due later this year.
4) Kia Cerato Forte (from $46,999)
The Cerato Forte has been the surprise of the year so far. Kia's latest compact saloon is a quantum leap in all areas over its predecessor. It's biggest draws are probably the sharp styling inside and out, and the amount of standard equipment it offers despite its budget price tag. If there's a car that ought to convince you that the Koreans have reached or even surpass the standard of the Japanese, the Cerato Forte will be it. I expect this to be an even more common sight on our roads by year's end.
3) Toyota Vios (from $56,888) (TOYOTA AXIO)
Yes, another Toyota - they're in a strong position to be the number one brand here by year's end. Just like the Altis (see below), the Thai-made Vios is a car designed and developed specifically for South-East Asian markets, catering to the needs of the region's drivers. The styling is a tad on the boring side, but its other virtues are more than enough to make up for this.
2) Toyota Corolla Altis (from $72,488) (TOYOTA ALLION)
Live with an Altis for a couple of days and you'll understand its appeal and popularity. There is just little to loathe about this car - the engines offer strong and efficient performance, the equipment list is long, and it looks inoffensive. Best of all, it offers Toyota dependability.
1) Hyundai Avante (from $47,999)
The Korean marque bounced back to the upper reaches of the sales charts after a rather quiet past few years. The Avante has been around for several years but recent price revisions (thanks to the weak Korean won), has made it really popular for those on a limited budget for a compact saloon. That said, there's hardly anything outstanding about the Avante other than its affordable price.

Toyota Prius Becomes The First Lte Connected Car In The World

Not only is 2010 going to introduce the first commercially available wireless LTE networks but it looks like various cars of the future will be able to offer the same high-speed 4G connectivity.
The first LTE Connected Car in the world is going to be the Toyota Prius. As announced by ng Connect, the popular hybrid car will offer on board 4G LTE connectivity at some point in the future.

Toyota, as a member of the ng Connect Program, has worked with various companies in order to transform the 2010 Toyota Prius into the first connected LTE hybrid car in the world. With technological support from companies like Alcatel-Lucent, Atlantic Records, QNX Software Systems, chumby and Kabillion, the future Prius will be able to deliver that fast 4G connectivity that we were waiting for. Such a feature is definitely most welcomed while being on the road. It’s the driver’s job to focus on the road but everyone else can enjoy various services made possible by an LTE network.

The LTE Connected Car will offer you “entertainment, infotainment and security services” like vide on-demand, gaming, GPS navigation, vehicle monitoring, home control and a more. Wi-Fi support will definitely be included which means that connected devices will be able to browse the web freely while inside the 2010 Toyota Prius.

We have no idea when your Prius could be transformed in order to accommodate LTE services. Various cell phone makers and wireless subscribers are getting ready to roll out new products that will offer you LTE connectivity and LTE-based services. Most carriers will probably have LTE available next year which might mean that an LTE Connected Toyota Prius could arrive at some point later next year. And let’s not forget about the recent announcement made by a lot of important names in the mobile business earlier this week. An LTE standard solution for voice and SMS services has been already agreed upon which means we’re almost good to go.

NAP: New car owners to suffer too

As usual, Malaysians won't react and stand up for those affected because they themselves are not affected. In this case, the new car owners will not stand up and fight for the old car owners.

But there is a whole bigger picture here that will affect new car owners under the clause 'prohibition of import of used parts starting 2011'.

What this means is this. Let's say - hypothetically - your Toyota Vios gets involved in an accident, and the bumper as well as the front headlamp is damaged. Where do you go to get the spare parts?

Nowadays, you would go to the 'potong' shop which sells first-choice used car parts for the various imported makes. Either you would pay for repairs on your own or if the insurance companies would pay for it.

Now imagine if there are no more 'potong' shops because after 2011, they would not be allowed to import used car parts anymore What will happen then?

Wouldn't your insurance premiums double-up instantly? You are already paying for expensive cars, now spare parts for them will also be super-expensive!

Currently, when you have a problem with your alternator or your air-con compressor, your first choice would be a reconditioned unit, right? Imagine, a brand new alternator for foreign makes like Toyota could cost you RM2000, but a reconditioned one only RM500.

The statements released by the car makers - both foreign and national - in Malaysia regarding the NAP clearly show they have vested interests in this issue and they will make a big profit at the expense of all Malaysian motorists.

So new car-owners, please band together with us old car-owners to put a stop to this. Our collective voices can be heard and the government will have to listen. Remember the teaching of science and maths in English some time back?

Didn't the government change its stance a few days later after the massive protests? If you don't want to support the abolishment of the inspection for cars 15 years or older, never mind. At least help us abolish this 'prohibition of import of used parts'. Let's act now and together!

Talks About New Toyota Car

The 2010 Toyota Venza ranks 9 out of 30 Affordable Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 29 published reviews and test drives of the Toyota Venza, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

Reviewers praise the Venza, Toyota's Camry-based crossover for providing all the comforts of a sedan with the functionality of an SUV. Unlike Toyota's other crossover SUVs, the Venza does not feature three-row seating -- giving it an advantage over competitors in cargo space.

On the outside, the Venza stands out from the competition with a sleek profile that's similar to the Ford Edge or Buick Enclave. In fact, its styling makes it look like a modern station wagon. Its spacious interior is a strength, though its performance is less than inspiring. Still, its driving experience is more than solid enough to make it a good daily driver. In fact, Autoblog reports that the New England Motor Press Association named the Venza the "Official Winter Vehicle of New England." Automobile Magazine concludes: "Truth be told, the Venza makes the average SUV look like yesterday's news. It won't tow like an SUV or go off-road like a Jeep. But for everything else, it's a breath of fresh air."

The Venza is one of the less expensive SUVs in its class. Still, the Dodge Journey costs several thousand dollars less and offers comfortable seating for seven. But it can't beat the Venza's excellent fuel economy. At 19/26 mpg city/highway, it nearly bests every SUV in its class. In fact, it's second only to the Toyota Highlander Hybrid and refreshed Mazda CX-7. With a relatively low base price, high fuel economy and excellent safety equipment, the Venza is a great family vehicle.

The Venza sees no changes for 2010, which means buyers might do better to buy a 2009 model. Dealers may be offering discounts on 2009s to make way for the new 2010s on their lots. Be sure to check for current Toyota deals that may be available on a new Venza.

The Venza comes in one trim offered with eight option packages and four stand-alone options. It's available in either front- or all-wheel drive.

  • "Like the Camry and Highlander upon which it is based, Venza isn't an excitement machine. It is, however, quite versatile and surprisingly roomy. ... Pricing is on the steep side, but that should be at least partially offset by Toyota's reputation for reliability and strong resale values." -- Consumer Guide
  • "In many ways, the Venza is indeed ‘the car, optimized,' but buyers will have to decide whether all that ‘optimization' is worth the extra coin. Although the Venza is great-looking and relatively pleasing to drive -- and a more appealing package than either the Camry or Highlander -- we're not entirely convinced that it is." -- Car and Driver
  • "So the Venza has to cut through an awful lot of crossover clutter to get noticed. But this Toyota's frisky moves, smart interior and solid fuel economy should please anyone looking for a wagon that's more car than crossover." -- Popular Mechanics
  • "This crossover isn't just an SUV alternative. It's a Camry done better." -- Edmunds
  • "Stew it all up, and Venza's an impressive piece of work that might, as Toyota says, appeal to both sedan and crossover shoppers." -- USA Today
  • "Toyota wants buyers to think of Venza as a car. Bad news, guys: The Venza is not a car. It's a crossover. But there's good news, too: It's a very, very good crossover." -- About.com
  • "The utility of the Highlander, the luxury of the Avalon; if this is what you're seeking, then you'll find it in the Venza." -- Washington Times

College grads in factories

Toyota Motor Corp. has decided to deploy about 900 university-educated first-year employees who entered the company this spring to its factories for about three months beginning in January, The Yomiuri Shimbun learned Saturday.

These employees, including those in white-collar and engineering positions, are scheduled to help assemble cars and perform other factory jobs. Although university graduates usually are sent to factories as a part of training, it is extremely rare for them to join assembly lines in full operation.

Toyota's production sites are facing a labour shortage because its hybrid cars such as the Prius are in great demand. However, it is difficult to employ new workers due to cost-reduction efforts and because future demand for such cars is uncertain. To cope with the situation, the company decided to utilise its first-year employees to help alleviate the labour shortage for the time being.

These new employees were assigned this month to the company's headquarters, branches and research institutions after completing training at factories and distribution outlets.

Their new workplaces likely will be plants producing Toyota's major car models, including the Tsutsumi factory in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture, which has been producing the Prius.

The number of cars Toyota produced domestically dropped to 140,000 a month in February, when the company was forced to make its largest-ever production cuts.

However, Toyota sales have been improving thanks to the government's introduction of tax breaks and a subsidy system to encourage consumers to change to more environmentally friendly cars. The trend is expected to continue before the subsidy system expires at the end of March. To cope with Toyota's plans to produce about 300,000 cars monthly between January and March, the company has been forced to secure more production staff.

Toward this end, Toyota is using support personnel dispatched from its business partners, including car parts makers, since June and began employing temporary workers in October for the first time in 16 months.

However, Toyota likely will be cautious about employing a large number of additional temporary workers, as the company was criticized for its decision to not renew temporary worker contracts.

Toyota is believed to have decided to utilise its first-year employees because demand for cars might decline after the government's support measures end.

Toyota Records Monthly Sales

Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) said on Thursday its car sales in China in September rose 45 percent from a year earlier to a record monthly high of about 72,000 vehicles as stimulus policies bolstered consumer confidence.

In the first nine months of the year, the top Japanese automaker sold about 486,000 cars in China, up 13 percent from a year earlier, a company spokesman said.

"Market demand has been very strong this year especially for small cars thanks to the government's incentives. New models also helped push up our sales," he said.

China's auto market, which overtook the United States as the world's biggest in January, is a major bright spot amid a global industry downturn as government policies, including aggressive cuts in sales tax for small cars, bolster demand.

Earlier this year, Toyota, which competes with Honda Motor (7267.T) and others in China, rolled out revamped version of Vios and Yaris compact cars -- both eligible for the tax incentives.

It also launched RAV4, a sport utility vehicle produced by its venture with FAW Group in April, followed by Highlander SUV, made at its tie-up with Guangzhou Automobile, the next month.

Guangzhong Toyota had recently raised the annual sales target of Highlander to 35,000 units for the full year, from 20,000 units due to brisk sales, said the spokesman.

Other foreign automakers, including Volkswagen (VOWG.DE) and General Motors [GM.UL], are also among major beneficiaries of Beijing's policy support.

Volkswagen sold 1.06 million vehicles in China and Hong Kong from January to September, up 37 percent from a year earlier. GM's China sales rose 55.6 percent to 1.29 million during the period.

The G grade is considered to be a mid-priced model between the E and S grades, retailing at an estimated RM 85,300.

Toyota added a fourth grade called the J grade, which is the cheapest and most bare bone grade of the Toyota Vios in Malaysia. Unlike the other grades which are only available with an automatic transmission, the J grade has the option for a manual transmission. Good Tyre For Toyota

When Goodyear launched its 100,000-km tyre – the DuraPlus – there were skeptics among consumers and understandably so. 100,000 kms represents about 4 - 5 years of motoring for many people and the idea of a tyre being able to last that long was a bit hard to accept. Furthermore, the DuraPlus is not one of the expensive specialized tyres with an exotic compound that was specially developed for long life; it is actually an affordably-priced tyre intended for what Goodyear refers to as the 'value segment’.
Prior to launch, enough testing by their own engineers had given confidence to Richard Fleming, Goodyear’s ASEAN Managing Director, to boldly make the claim. Not only had the tyres been tested in Goodyear’s own facilities but also on Asian roads so there was no uncertainty about the capability to go 100,000 kms. Of course, that figure depends very much on various factors such as proper care of the tyres (alignment, balancing, pressure) and also driving conditions. Goodyear is confident that most motorists will get the claimed mileage but as Mr Fleming said, it is a 'claim’ and not a 'guarantee’.

The Toyota Vios testcars were driven for 7 weeks, 24 hours a day, on a specific route in Thailand
Anyway, to demonstrate their confidence further, Goodyear ASEAN ran an 'DuraPlus Endurance Challenge’ which began with the launch of the tyre in Thailand and which ASEAN media was invited to start off. This writer was among the media to contribute the first few hundred kms of wear for the challenge which lasted 7 weeks.
The tyres were fitted on a Toyota Vios model (1.5J version with a size of 185/65R14) obtained from a car rental company and the fleet consisted of four similar cars. The other three cars were fitted with tyres of competitors to make comparisons. The procedures were strict and aimed at eliminating variations due to different cars so the tyres were rotated among the cars. Test drivers drove for 24 hours, 6 days a week, three shifts per day, and travelled in a convoy to ensure maximum consistency – in terms of the route, road and weather conditions on a specific course in Thailand.

Toyota announced that it is recalling 688,314 cars in China due to a faulty window control system.

The recall is said to be the largest in the country and is expected t o tarnish its image as one of the world’s leading car maker. The problem was noted in the Corolla, Yaris, Camry and one other model.

The fault was identified as over lubrication of some components on the window control at the driver’s side that could lead to short circuit and overheating. The fault has lead to the window control melting in a few rare incidents; however, no injuries were reported.

The Wall Street Journal quoted a Toyota executive who spoke under conditions of anonymity that it is plausible that the latest recall in China combined with a previous recall in April could lead to a drop in Chinese consumer confidence in Toyota.

new grade toyota vios

new launched vios j grade

Recently Toyota Malaysia announce for the latest grade for their Toyota Vios that is Vios J Grade. It is more affordable and quite a good offer for Malaysian.

Specifications are lower than the current Vios in E, G and S grades but the vios J still gets the fuel efficient 1.5-litre VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) engine, anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist.

The second generation Toyota Vios Malaysia is currently available in three grades: two grades initially available on the previous Malaysian Vios (E and G), and a new grade (S). Now the latest grade is the Toyota Vios J.
